Electronic keys are used on many Chevrolet vehicles to provide security for the engine. These auto keys are synced with Chevy transponder key programming.

Security and convenience are two important areas of consideration on any vehicle around the world, and this is no different for most Chevrolet vehicles. In addition to keyless remotes used for convenience and safety, driver’s can equip their Chevy’s with transponder key systems that offer extra security for the engine and starter. These keys are also known as chip keys or electronic keys, and can be synced on many different Chevrolet models.

Chevy Transponder Keys

The keys used with Chevy vehicles are programmed to an electronic transmitter system underneath the vehicle’s dashboard, and are issued by the dealership. While these keys must be made and cut by a professional, it is possible to program and troubleshoot the keys through reprogramming with no professional experience or equipment. Once the technology is installed, only a programmed transponder key will be able to start a Chevy vehicle. Up to four different Chevy transponder keys can be synced to one vehicle.

Programming Chevrolet Keys

When ready to program, the owner should sit in their vehicle with their new key and have at least 30 minutes before the programmed key is needed. The programming process for the Chevy transponder key is started by inserting the key into the ignition as normal. Once inserted, the key will be stationary in the “Off” position. The first step to the programming is to turn the key to the right two clicks – to the “Run” position – and leave the key in that position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.

Once the 10 minutes and 30 seconds have elapsed, the key should be turned back to the “Off” position within 45 seconds. Steps two and three are to repeat the process already completed. This should be repeated two more times – leaving the key in the ignition for 10 minutes and 30 seconds – for a total of three cycles.

After the third cycle, the key should be neutral in the “Off” position. The transponder key can then be turned again to the “Run” position. This time, it should be left in that position for only 2-3 seconds, and then turned again to the right to the “Run” position. If the car starts successfully, the programming will have been completed and the key will be ready to use as normal.

This process can be completed with up to four different keys for your Chevy, and can be distributed to family. Only these four electronic transponder keys will then be able to start your car through the ignition cylinder.
